You do not need a cable box to follow sports in 2026, but you do need a plan. The rights to most leagues are now split across broadcast networks, live TV streaming bundles and standalone apps, and a fan who follows two or three sports can end up paying for six services without meaning to. This guide shows how to work out the smallest set that covers your games, with prices as of October 2026.

Start with where your sports air

Everything in the middle column is free with an antenna. Everything in the right-hand column needs a paid service.

SportFree broadcast channelsStreaming services
NFLCBS, FOX, NBC, ABCParamount+, Fox One, Peacock, ESPN, Prime Video, Netflix, NFL Sunday Ticket
NBANBC, ABCPeacock, ESPN, Prime Video, NBA League Pass
NHLABC (some games)ESPN, Hulu, HBO Max
MLB postseasonFOXFox One, HBO Max
College footballABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, The CWESPN, Fox One, Paramount+, Peacock, HBO Max
UFCCBS (selected events)Paramount+
Formula 1NoneApple TV

If most of your games sit in the middle column, an antenna does a lot of the work and you may only need one app. If they sit mostly on the right, you are choosing between a bundle and separate apps.

Option 1: a live TV streaming bundle

Live TV streaming services work most like cable: one bill, a channel guide and your local stations. Three of them now sell sports-focused packages for about $65 a month: YouTube TV Sports, DirecTV MySports and Fubo Sports. All three include ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, ESPN and NFL Network, according to PCWorld's August 2026 comparison. The full YouTube TV lineup costs about $83 a month. NFL RedZone is an extra monthly add-on on YouTube TV and DirecTV.

Sling is cheaper and more piecemeal. Sling Select costs about $20 a month and is built around NFL Network and FS1. Local ABC, NBC and FOX stations cost $5 to $10 a month extra depending on how many you add, ESPN and ESPN2 come with Sling Essentials for another $15, and Sling does not carry CBS at all. None of these bundles include Prime Video's Thursday Night Football or Netflix's NFL games.

Option 2: build it from standalone apps

If you only care about one or two sports, separate apps are often cheaper than a bundle. These are the ones that matter for live sports:

AppPrice (October 2026)Live sports
Paramount+ Essential$8.99 a monthCBS's NFL and college football games, every UFC event
Paramount+ Premium$13.99 a monthThe same plus your live local CBS station, without ads
Peacock Premium$12.99 a monthSunday Night Football, NBC and Peacock NBA games, Big Ten Saturday Night
Fox OneAbout $20 a monthFOX's NFL games, Big Noon Kickoff, the NLCS and the World Series
ESPN Unlimited$31.99 a monthMonday Night Football, ESPN and ABC games in the NBA, NHL and college football
Apple TV$12.99 a monthEvery Formula 1 session
Prime VideoPrime Video subscriptionThursday Night Football, 66 NBA games, the NBA Play-In
NetflixNetflix planTwo NFL games on Christmas Day
HBO MaxHBO Max planTNT's NHL games, the ALCS, some College Football Playoff games

Two things to watch. Peacock's cheaper Select plan, $8.99, does not include live sports, so check the tier before you pay. ESPN's price rose from $29.99 to $31.99 a month in August 2026 for new customers, and existing subscribers see the new price from their first bill after September 17. ESPN also sells bundles with Fox One and with NFL+ Premium that cost less than buying the apps separately.

Option 3: out-of-market packages

These are for fans who live away from their team, and they sit on top of whatever you choose above.

  • NFL Sunday Ticket on YouTube costs $378 for the 2026 season for current YouTube TV customers, $240 for new YouTube TV subscribers, or $480 through YouTube Primetime Channels without YouTube TV. It covers out-of-market Sunday afternoon games only, not Thursday games, local CBS or FOX games, Thanksgiving games or the playoffs.
  • NFL+ Premium is about $15 a month and includes NFL Network and NFL RedZone.
  • NBA League Pass carries games that are neither on national TV nor in your local market. It is sold in the NBA App and on NBA.com.
  • MLB.TV is now sold through ESPN under baseball's new deals, and ESPN also streams in-market games for six teams.

Three example setups

The local NFL fan

An antenna covers CBS, FOX and NBC, which is most of a team's schedule. Add Prime Video in the weeks your team plays on Thursday, and ESPN Unlimited only for a month in which your team has an ESPN-only Monday game. In a month with neither, the only cost is the antenna.

The national NBA fan

ESPN Unlimited ($31.99) and Peacock Premium ($12.99) together cost about $45 a month, and with Prime Video they cover every national game. An antenna adds the NBC and ABC broadcasts free, which is useful as a backup when an app has problems on a big night.

The fight and racing fan

Paramount+ Essential ($8.99) for every UFC event and Apple TV ($12.99) for every F1 session comes to $21.98 a month. Switch Apple TV to its $99 annual plan and the racing half drops to about $8.25 a month.

Ways to keep the bill down

  • Cancel between seasons. The World Series ends by October 31 and the F1 season ends on December 6.
  • Use free trials around single events. Apple TV has a seven-day trial for new subscribers.
  • Pay yearly for the apps you keep all year. Peacock Premium is $129.99 a year and Paramount+ Essential is $89.99.
  • Check what your phone, internet or credit card plan already includes before you pay twice for the same service.
